Administrative History | The schools were founded by the Wingerworth Coal Company, before being taken over by the Clay Lane Urban District School Board in 1877.
The original school buildings became overcrowded, and a decision was reached in 1882 to erect replacements on a site to be purchased from the Wingerworth Coal Company. However, a dispute over the value of the site broke out, and the company informed the board that it would have to vacate the original school building before the end of June 1882. This meant that the schools had to relocate temporarily, the boys to the Lings Row Methodist chapel, the girls to the North Wingfield church school buildings. The new school buildings were ready to open in January 1883.
After the Education Act 1902 handed the functions of school boards to local authorities, the schools for infants, boys and girls in North Wingfield became separate departments of North Wingfield Council School. In 1911, parts of the school again relocated to temporary accommodation at Lings Row Sunday School, before the opening of new school buildings on the Chesterfield Road / Blacks Lane site in 1914.
The school later became known as North Wingfield Junior School, and in 2007 became North Wingfield Primary and Nursery School. This was moved to a new site in 2015, and became an academy in 2020. |
