Administrative HistoryAlfreton Iron Works was established by the Oakes family in Riddings in 1801. The business expanded into coal and iron mines, iron smelting furnaces and the manufacture of cast iron pipes. Originally owned by the Oakes family of Riddings House, later James Oakes & Co Ltd., the firm eventually became part of Stanton Iron Works Co Ltd (see D3808).
