Description
This map is described in the Derbyshire Record Society's "A Catalogue of Local Maps of Derbyshire c.1528–1800" (compiled by Harold Nichols, revised by Mary Wiltshire assisted by Susan Woore, published 2012). The description reads as follows:
The Manour of Morton. Thos. Kirkland de Ashbourn. Mensuravit et delineavit Anno 1726. Surveyor:Thomas Kirkland. Scale: of 10 chaines [l:3200] with dividers. Size: 82 x 94 cm. Materials: coloured ink on parchment. Centred on: SK4060 Notes: two 8 point compass roses, top of sheet north-west. Estate map showing named closes with reference letters for tenants and parcel numbers: houses, church, in Morton village etc., distinctive perspective, apparently correctly orientated: hedgerows, fences, woods, roads, bridlepaths, footways, gates: letters distinguish Arable, Pasture, Meadow, Wood and Freehold: a 'Table of Tenants names' and reference letters: explanation shows that lands lying together and called by the same name are 'encompassed and distinguished by a particular colour': well-drawn, for display on rods. Coat of-arms of Rt. Hon. Nicholas Earl of Scarsdale (Craven, pp48-9): endorsement 'This map was sent to me by Sir Sitwell Sitwell's Executor and I suppose the Book to which the numbers etc. etc. refer is in the possession of his family.
