Administrative History | The Clay Cross Company was established by George Stephenson in 1837 and by 1860 it was one of the three largest coal producers in the county with a capacity of half a million tons of coal a year. In 1861 there was a 'calamitous Inundation' in the colliery which resulted in fatalities amongst the miners. On 9 August 1861a public meeting was held in Chesterfield to organise fundraising for the widows, orphans and families of the victims. Trustees of the Fund were proposed by the Revd George Butt. The Clay Cross Colliery contributed £500 to the disaster fund. |
