Administrative HistoryThe London Midland Division of British Rail was established on 1 January 1948 under the Transport Act of the previous year. Its immediate predecessor company was the London Midland and Scottish Railway Company, which had been founded in 1923 from the amalgamation of the Midland Railway Company and a number of smaller railway companies. The Midland Railway Company itself dated back to 1844, when it was formed from the North Midland, Midland Counties and the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway Companies.
