| Description | A consignment of courtesans in unloaded in a foreign port. They are measured and examined by a mixture of men in turbans and Englishmen. Unsuitable candidates are shown in to a building on the right marked: 'WAREHOUSE FOR UNSALIABLE GOODS FROM EUROPE NB To be returned by the next ship'. On the left an auctioneer, holding his hammer, stands on a box.

The print is based Gillray's 'A Sale of English Beauties' (BM Sat 7014). This was an attack on the morals of the English in India, possibly connected to proceedings against Warren Hastings of the East India Company. The auctioneer is possibly intended to be Christie. |
