DescriptionA scene in a lawyer's office. There is a sloping desk and stool, and around the room are bookshelves, bundles of papers and notices posted on the wall. On the left a young clerk, a quill in his hand, is crouching with his arms outstretched, looking up at a shocked older man. Behind the older man stand a strong-looking maid with a bucket of water and a surprised older woman wearing glasses.

Verse reads:
"Dramatic Phrensy, to no place confind | At freedom roves, and occupies the Mind, | The Lawyers Clerk, Old Square-toes will to cross, | Who spouts Lothario when he should engross
All on a sudden from his writing stoops | 'My fierce ambitious soul declining droops' | His simple Master by - cries "whats the matter? | Tom's in a fit here - Betty bring some water!"

The clerk quotes lines spoken by Lothario in the 'Fair Penitent' by Rowe.
