DescriptionA naval man addresses a modest young woman. The sailor, on the right, is wearing striped trousers, a cocked hat and a sword. He has his arms crossed and says to the woman: "Avast madam d'ye see I love plain sailing. I like your stern and your stern very well, but if you wish to impress me into your service - you must hoist up your canvas that I may have a full view of your upper works, - and if they pleas [sic] me, hay hap I may take a cruize with you.
The woman, walking towards the right and looking back towards the sailor, is wearing a veil and has her hands in a muff.
