TitleJohn Bull rather shy of his Peace Pudding
Date[1800-1809]
DescriptionOn the right of the table is seated John Bull, a large man wearing a cap on his head. He has a pained expression and is holding up a fork to his open mouth on which is a piece of pudding labelled 'Separate Peace with Russia' on his fork, and complains:
"It is D____d tough to be sure, - I shall never be able to digest it. Hollo you Whipper Snapper, you may take it back again, - you have kept all the best for yourself."

Napoleon stands the left of the table on which is a huge pudding, parts of which are labelled 'Realities for Boney' and 'Promises for John Bull'. Under his arm is a piece of pudding labelled 'Subjugation of the Continent' and he replies: "Begar Mr Jean Bull it be var good you never know when you are well off it is piping hot - and you will find ver pretty picking." Further InformationThis may refer to peace negotiations with France in 1806. News of a separate treaty signed with a Russian Minister on 20 Jul 1806 led to the Earl of Lauderdale being sent by Charles James Fox to continue negotiations.
