DescriptionJosephine, a large woman wearing a crown and holding a sceptre, berates the Queen of Spain:
"How dare you come before our presence did you not acknowledge yourself to be a woman of a certain description - how can you talk to a woman of my virtue - you said your husband was a cuckold and your children all Bastards - O fie for shame."

Queen of Spain, on the right, holds out her arms, and bowing slightly replies:
"Madam on the word of a queen - it is all fudge." Available on CD 158.

Further InformationThis is an ironic attack on the honour of the two women, as it was widely known that the Queen María Luisa of Spain (1748-1819) had been unfaithful to her husband with the chief minister Manuel Godoy and Josephine (1763-1814) was known to be unfaithful to Napoleon. The drawing dates from after Napoleon made himself Emperor in 1804.
