Further InformationThe drawing refers to the 'Broken Bridge' episode of May 1809 at Aspern-Essling. Heavy barges were used to cut the bridges, leaving Napoleon cut off from his reinforcements and artillery. He therefore abandoned the attack and retired to Lobau. Although the attack was suspended, the Austrians suffered heavier losses than the French, and could not pursue the French, who were therefore saved from a worse attack. The 'Moniteur' attributed the incident to flooding alone. The incident was not much covered by other satirists.
