Thomas King (1730-1805) was originally articled to a London solicitor, in 1747 he ran away and joined a strolling theatre company. In 1748 he was discovered by Garrick and brought to Drury Lane. He was famed for his comic delivery and became Drury Lane's chief comedian as well as speaking many of the prologues which Garrick had traditionally delivered. He first played Touchstone in the 1765-1766 season and as part of Garrick's Stratford jubilee in 1769 he marched as Touchstone in the Jubilee procession at Drury Lane
