Further Information | 'The Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves', by Tobias Smollett is the tale of a modern-day knight-errant, and his trials before he can be reunited with his long-lost love, Aurelia Darnel. Smollett originally published the book in instalments in 'The British Magazine' in 1760-1761, before publishing it as a complete novel in 1762.
The given titles are the titles of the chapters in which the scene occurs.
In 1800 Ackermann published six prints illustrating scenes from Smollett's 'Roderick Random', of which two were by Woodward. (See D5459/2/19). The drawings for 'Sir Launcelot Greaves' may therefore be tentatively dated to c. 1800, and may have been connected with this project. |
