[In 1844 Winterbottom, a Stockport solicitor and holder of many public offices, was convicted of forgery and sentenced to transportation for life. See Eveline Barbara Dean's book, "The Woodhouses letters: what they revealed and where they led: studies of nineteenth century (Bolton : Ross Anderson, 1986).]
