TitleDraft warrants
Date1692
Description1) Order concerning Mary Toplis of Ashbourne. Several persons have alleged that Mary has lately had a bastard child which has been made away with or murdered. The warrant requires her to be searched by Ashbourne women to see whether she has given birth and if so what has happened to the child. If there is reason to suspect wrongdoing, Mary is to be brought before the county magistrates John Apperley and Thomas Ball, both in Tissington, 4 May 1692

2) Petition by Lydia Bradshaw of Ashbourne, wife of William Bradshaw, weaver. Robert Alsop of Ashbourne, labourer, has broken down her door and struck her to the ground. Robert Alsop and Jane his wife and William Shurley, dyer, and Elizabeth his wife, also of Ashbourne, have threatened her further so that Lydia is in fear of harm to herself or her house. Therefore she petitions that they give surety to keep the peace. Lydia has sworn an oath that she is not motivated by ill will, but only by fear of bodily harm or harm to her house

This document was found inside the back cover of a printed book Historical Collections part 2 by John Rushworth, 1680. The title page was inscribed 'John Borrows.' The document, which appears to be complete, is a single piece of paper (about 6 inches by 5 inches) with three irregular edges. It appears to be a draft with numerous emendations and crossings-out by or for a local Justice of the Peace, possibly either John Appleby or Thomas Ball of Tissington, both of whom are named.
