Wirksworth Cricket Club
Administrative History
The Wirksworth Cricket Club was founded in 1849. A report was made in the Derby Mercury of a Sheffield v Wirksworth match in 1757, which shows that Wirksworth had the first cricket club in Derbyshire. The families of Bowmer, Taylor and Arkwright have been prominent amongst the members of the club.
The club joined the Derbyshire County League in 1971. Its youth teams were formed in 1974, with a second XI competing in league competition from 1977.
In 1982 the club funded the modernisation of the club's pavillion.
Middleton Cricket Club merged with Wirksworth Cricket Club in 2008.
Custodial History
The records were deposited in the Derbyshire Record Office at various dates between March 2000 and February 2011. Records for Middleton Cricket Club were donated by a former secretary in September 2022.
