Administrative HistoryMarkland County Secondary School in Creswell provided secondary education for Whitwell and part of Creswell from 1958 (the other part of Creswell as served by Creswell Church of England Secondary School). The governors first met in June 1957 when the school was initially named the Winifred Portland County Secondary School. The governors decided to change the name to Markland County Secondary School at its meeting in September 1957. The change of name was confirmed by the Education Committee in late 1958/early 1959. In September 1969 Creswell Church of England Secondary School closed and the children transferred to Markland. The old Creswell CE school site became Markland Lower School. In 1977 new buildings at Sheffield Road allowed Markland School to operate on a single site. In July of that year the school became a Comprehensive School serving Creswell and Elmton. The School closed in 1991 following the review of post-primary education in North East Derbyshire and the pupils were transferred to the Heritage Community School at Clowne. The site of Markland School was then used as an annex for the North Derbyshire Tertiary College.
