Administrative History | In 1941 the National Fire Service took over responsibility from borough and district councils. In 1947, the system was decentralised, with county councils and county boroughs becaming responsible for fire services. From 1974, each of the new county councils and the Greater London Council (GLC) maintained a separate fire service. The Derbyshire Fire Services (Combination Scheme) Order of 1996 created a combined Derbyshire Fire Authority, its members to be appointed by Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council. As a result of various amendments to legislation the Fire Service's remit has broadened over the years to include fire prevention and inspection of premises.
