Administrative HistoryFrancis Tantum, fifth son of Thomas and Phebe, was born on 24 November 1796. He was named after his mother's brother who had been murdered in 1795.
He married Ann Bowman in 1833 (see D4734/4/7) by whom he had several children including Francis (Frank) Howitt (see D4734/10), Ebenezer (see D4734/10/1) and Mary (see D4734/10/2). After Ann's death in 1847 he married Maria Burtt (see D4734/8). Francis died on 3 March 1879, the same day as his brother William.
His papers reflect involvement in the local community, not just with the Society of Friends. He was the principal beneficiary of his father's will, by which he inherited substantial property, and this led to some disagreement with his brothers William and Richard (see D4734/6/20/1-72).
He lived in the family home The Dene, Mansfield Road, Heanor, which was demolished in 1935.
