Administrative HistoryBakewell Rural Sanitary Authority came into existence under the provisions of the Public Health Act 1872 by which Boards of Guardians were designated Rural Sanitary Authorities. Under the Local Government Act 1894 Rural Sanitary Authorities became Rural District Councils. They ceased to exist on local government reorganisation in 1974. Among areas of responsibility for the Rural Sanitary Authority/Rural District Council were: public health and hygiene, removal of nuisances, burial grounds, slaughterhouses, infectious diseases, water supply, premises, housing, repair of roads, traffic. .
