Fields numbered, some named, strips shown; some owner's names; Normanton Moor and windmill shown; houses shown in elevation; some fields marked 'free'; Glebe, woodland, roads including Archer Lane, and gates marked.
This map is described in the Derbyshire Record Society's "A Catalogue of Local Maps of Derbyshire c.1528–1800" (compiled by Harold Nichols, revised by Mary Wiltshire assisted by Susan Woore, published 2012). The description reads as follows:
A MAPPE of the Lordshippe of S:Normanton in Com.Derb. taken Ao. DOMI. 1699; by John Halton. Surveyor:John Halton. Scale: of 20 chains or ¼ English mile [1:4000] with dividers Size: 113 x 76 cm. Materials: faded ink on parchment with repair. Centred on: SK4456 Notes: cardinal points in margin, top of sheet east. Estate plan showing manor-house and church in distinctive perspective: Carnfield Hall, in elevation: closes and crofts with tenant, reference numbers and freehold noted: open fields, field patterns show considerable strip element in hamlet and north-west: stream, roads, post mill in elevation [ruins on site, 1972]: woods, orchards, dams: border of straw plaiting style associated with John Halton. Location: privately owned by James Cartland, The Mansion House, Ashbourne; copies in DRO, D451 Z/Z1, Size: 45 x 125cm. Materials: black ink on linen tracing paper. Notes: fairly crude tracing [1967] with roads and houses coloured red, river and streams blue; DRO, D4996/6/23, tracing; Chesterfield Library (Local Studies), Map Cabinet 1 A868, modern coloured copy.
