Administrative History | Mansfield and District Traction Company (MDTC) was founded in 1901 and became part of the Midland General Group in the 1920s. East Midlands Motor Services Ltd (EMMS) began life in 1920, known as W T Underwood Ltd until 1927. Originally based in Clowne, EMMS moved headquarters to Worksop in 1927 and Chesterfield in 1930. Both EMMS and MDTC became part of the state-owned National Bus Company as a result of the Transport Act 1968; the assets of MDTC were transferred to EMMS in 1976.
Deregulation of buses began in 1986, and EMMS was acquired by Stagecoarch East Midlands in 1989.
Chesterfield Corporation acquired the Chesterfield Tramway Company in 1897. Bus services were first operated in 1914. In 1974 the fleet name was changed to Chesterfield Transport, which in 1986 became a limited company, trading as Chesterfield Transport Limited. Chesterfield Transport Limited was taken over by Stagecoach 1995.

D4433/2-14 East Midlands Motor Services Limited The earliest documents involving East Midland Motor Services Ltd (abbreviated to East Midland below) is in 1927, (see D4433/11/6). Its business was sold to L & NE Railway and L M & S Railway jointly on 9 October 1929 (see D4433/11/1). The East Midland Company then went into liquidation. A new East Midland Motor Services Ltd was incorporated 28 March 1930 and agreed to purchase the motor services then being operated by the railways as from 1 May 1930, although the purchase was not completed until 28 February 1931. The assets of Mansfield District Traction Company were transferred to East Midland in 1976.
D4433/15-21 Mansfield and District Traction Company Mansfield District Traction Company, until 1928/29 Mansfield and District Light Railway Company. In 1976, assets of the Company were transferred to the East Midland Motor Services Limited.
D4433/22-42 Chesterfield Borough Transport Department Chesterfield and District Tramway Company Limited began operating horse trams between Chesterfield Market Place and Brampton in November 1882. The Tramway was taken over by Chesterfield Town Council in November 1897 and the system was expanded by the Council to serve both Chesterfield and the surrounding area. The trams were electrified in 1894 and the first motor buses came into service in 1914. Trolley buses replaced the trams in 1927. The Borough Transport Department bus services were taken over by Chesterfield Transport Ltd in 1986 under the Transport Act 1985.
D4433/43-48 Chesterfield Transport Limited, 1985-1989 Incorporated 6 Mar 1986, pursuant to Section 67 of the Transport Act 1985. The company took over the operation of Chesterfield Borough Transport Department bus service.
D4433/49-61 Chesterfield Transport (1989) Ltd, 1988-1990 and Chesterfield Transport Limited, 1974-1993 Ownership of Chesterfield Transport Limited passed from Chesterfield Council to the employees of the Company on 2 Apr 1990.
