| Administrative History | G R Turner Ltd originated in 1868 when G R Turner and a Mr Pender set up business on land adjoining the Midland Railway at Langley Mill. At first, they manufactured small engineering items for local collieries and repaired railway wagons. In 1874, Mr Turner built a new engineering works to be known as Vulcan Works, where railway wagons were manufactured. G R Turner died in 1893 and the business was continued by his son T N Turner until 1903. The firm became a limited company in 1903 not only manufacturing railway wagons but also installing mining machinery and fabricated steelwork. The decline in demand for railway wagons led to the Company being taken over by the group United Steel Companies Ltd in 1959. The Company operated as part of the United Steel Structural Co Ltd, one of the group's subsidiaries, producing fabricated steelwork. . |
