| Administrative History | Although the first Roman Catholic Chapel at Hathersage was established in 1692 on land given by the Furniss family, the building did not survive attack by a “protestant mob” early in the 18th century. Work began on its restoration in 1798 financed by a legacy from Thomas Eyre of Hyssop, and the chapel reopened in 1806. In 1821 George Jinks came to Hathersage to assist the then priest, Edward Eyre of Dronfield Woodhouse, whom he eventually succeeded in 1824. Baptism registers survive from 1822. With the restoration of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy after 1850, the mission at Hathersage became part of the Diocese of Nottingham in which it remained for 130 years. |
