Archive CreatorCastle Primary School, formerly St Peter's National School/Traffic Street Primary School, Derby
Administrative HistoryThe school began as St Peter's National School in Devonshire Street in July 1855 and later transferred to the Derby School Board in March 1873. The school moved to new premises in Traffic Street in April 1879. From 1884, there were separate departments for boys and girls, and records of an infants department are now extant. A separate junior school opened in April 1891, with a Head Teacher independent of the senior school. The boys and girls departments were merged, but separated again from April 1916 for pupils aged 7-13. Further reorganisation occurred in October 1932 when both schools became junior schools and senior pupils were transferred elsewhere. Once again, the boys and girls departments were merged in April 1933. A nursery was opened in November 1940.

Known as Castle School from January 1953, the schools (infants and junior) became one under a single Head from April 1966. Castle Nursery School closed in August 2015 [ref: OFSTED]
Custodial HistoryWhen the school closed, these records were held by Derby and South Derbyshire Area Education Office and transferred to Derbyshire Record Office in July 1988 as part of accession number D1458. The records were re-accessioned in October 1993. Further records were donated in 2018 and 2019.
