Administrative History
The Sheepbridge Co Ltd was incorporated in Sep 1864 under the name of the Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co Ltd. It changed its name to the Sheepbridge Co Ltd in 1948, and those sections of the company that were not nationalised became Sheepbridge Engineering Ltd (see pages 72-73) in 1951. The Sheepbridge Co Ltd was transferred to Staveley's control by the Iron and Steel Holding and Realisation Agency on 1 Jan 1955.
The Sheepbridge Co Ltd owned an ironstone mill at Desborough and blast furnaces. There were also two rolling mills producing steel rails, reinforcing bars and wrought iron sections. There was also a wagon repair shop.
The Sheepbridge Coal & Iron Co Ltd was acquired by the Staveley Iron and Chemical Co as a wholly owned subsidiary in 1955.
