DescriptionThese maps are described in the Derbyshire Record Society's "A Catalogue of Local Maps of Derbyshire c.1528–1800" (compiled by Harold Nichols, revised by Mary Wiltshire assisted by Susan Woore, published 2012). The description reads as follows:

Whitehaugh and Bowden Midlecale [17c]. Scale: no scale [1:14000]. Size: 44 x 39 cm. Materials: coloured ink on paper. Centred on: SK025850 Notes: cardinal points at edges not accurate, top of sheet south-east. Waste and commons boundary on Ollersett Moor, east of New Mills, with an extension south to Cotebank and Black Brook, 783 acres, land divided by grade, best, middle and worst, several parcels identified, e.g. 'within Mr Ashenhurst bondary', 'lande called Bearde wood': few boundary marks, 1 'yatt' named 'Spinerbothame', a ladder stile, 1 gate in Chinley Wall, bridge at Whitehough, houses in rough perspective, smithy. Endorsed 'Bowden Middlecale No.22' [n.d. 17c]. Scale: no scale [1:12500]. Size: 59 x 54 cm. Materials: coloured ink on paper. Centred on: SK0787 Notes: cardinal points at sheet edge, top of sheet east. Shows area east of Hayfield, 2007 acres of wastes, graded middle and worst sorts of land, with boundary marks, cloughs, crudely drawn rocks, 'Chinley Wall', 'Edowe Cross', streams noted: buildings, 2 houses, Hayfield church: divisions of parcels are drawn freely with wide bands of colour in a personal style.
