| Administrative History | Methodism in Buxton started in the 1740s, with visits by John Wesley to several places, including Chinley and Taddington. In the early years until 1813, societies in Buxton and the neighbouring area were covered by the circuit of Macclesfield [Cheshire], apart from a brief spell between 1799 and 1803, when they were covered by the Leek [Staffordshire] Circuit.
In 1813, the Buxton Circuit was launched and included Chapel-en-le-Frith (see D6243), Chinley, Bagshaw (D6244), Kettleshulme, Bugsworth (see D6241) and Dove Holes.
In 1867, Whaley Bridge, Chapel-en-le-Frith and other smaller chapels in the area broke away to form a new circuit of their own. In the following year the Primitive Methodists set up their own circuit in Buxton, created out of the Winster Primitive Methodist Circuit.
For a period from 1897, there was a separate Devonshire Park Mission which was independent of the Buxton Wesleyan Methodist Circuit until its return to the Circuit in 1905.
In 1932 the Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist Circuits amalgamated to form a new Methodist Circuit, which is still in existence today. |
