Archive CreatorDerby Quarter Sessions, 1446-1971
Administrative HistoryIn 1446 Derby Borough was given the right to appoint a Borough Recorder, who with two bailiffs, formed a commission of the peace to preside over the Court of Record. The charter of 1611 constituted certain officers justices of the peace to keep Quarter Sessions. Matters of civil administration were transferred to the Borough Council in 1888, and judicial matters to the Crown Court in 1972.

A fire in the 19th century and a flood in the 20th century destroyed many of Derby's official records.
Custodial HistoryThese records were transferred via Derby Local Studies Library under Section 4(1) of the Public Records Act in February 1992.
