Administrative History | The Glossop Borough Police was formed in 1867, overseen by a newly established Watch Committee. The borough appointed a Chief Constable (who also acted as Sanitary Inspector), a sergeant and six constables. The force was based in Ellison Street, and by 1875, there were 16 policemen. In 1886, the Borough Police began operating a Fire Brigade. By 1894 the police force had enlarged to have an Inspector, 3 Sergeants, 1 Detective and 20 Constables. This increased to 4 Sergeants and 24 Constables by 1913, and by 1943 there were 2 Inspectors, 6 Sergeants and 13 Constables. Glossop Borough Police merged with the Derbyshire Constabulary in 1947, and the Fire Brigade became part of the Derbyshire Fire Service in 1948.
