Administrative HistoryDerbyshire Constabulary was originally divided into districts. In 1864, these districts were: Alfreton, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Belper, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Chesterfield, Derby, Glossop, Eckington, Repton and Gresley, Smalley, and Wirksworth.

When the Glossop Borough Police was formed in 1867, Derbyshire Constabulary ceased having a Glossop district. Between 1900 and 1904, Smalley district was renamed Ilkeston district. By 1922, Belper had incorporated Matlock and Wirksworth, to become Matlock and Belper district.

Between 1922 and 1925, the districts became known as divisions, and by 1932 Matlock had joined Bakewell to become the Bakewell and Matlock division. By 1941, the Buxton and Chapel-en-le-Frith divisions had merged.
