Title
Photographs of family portraits in oil
Date
[1980s]
Description
Photographs of oil paintings of George Allen senior of Cromford, owner of Riber Hall (1774 - 1850); Ann (Wolley) Allen, his wife (1772-1862); George Allen junior, their son (1796-1866); Grace Allen, their daughter (1796-1862). p14 of 'The Derbyshire Connections of the Stokely family' states that it is family tradition that these were painted by George Turner of Cromford, whilst he resided at the coach house at Riber Hall. This seems unlikely as the dress of the sitters appears to be from the 1810s to 1830s, whereas George Turner was born in 1841. Turner was also a noted landscape painter and these portraits are in a very different style to his landscape paintings.
