Administrative HistoryFollowing the provisions made in the 1853 Charitable Trusts Act (sec 61) as amended in 1855, individual charities made annual returns to the Board of Charity Commissioners. In 1899, the papers on educational endowments were transferred to the Board of Education: these classes of record can be found as Public Record Office classes Ed 27 (Secondary) and Ed 49 (Elementary). No returns appear to survive for the period 1853-1900. It is not clear whether these have been destroyed, either before the documents were first transferred to The National Archives (as class Charity 1) around 1949, or since the early 1960s when they were transferred back to departmental storage, due to lack of use in The National Archives search room. Originally, there were three sub-series: topographical (by county and parish), Society of Friends, and general. Distribution of the Society of Friends accounts was to be organised by their archivist. The distinction between the other two series has been maintained in this list. The charities named do not necessarily appear through the whole period of the covering dates. Records relating to areas no longer in Derbyshire have been transferred to appropriate Record Offices.
Custodial HistoryThese records transferred to Derbyshire Record Office under Section 4(1) of the Public Records Act in November 1983. A further accession was received from the Charity Commission in March 2016. Accessions of April and August 2016 have not been listed (see D2723/UL).

Records relating to Beighton, formerly in this collection, have been transferred to Sheffield Archives.
