Letter from William Gell to his mother Elizabeth Gell [wife of Sir John Gell ] at Hopton - should have gone to Holland with Mr Coke but the 30s given him for the journey was not enough - there is a ship leaving within 2 days but he has not the 5s for the passage - asks her to help him as he does not wish to stay to be a further grief to her and disgrace to his friends - has suffered for his foolishness since he went to Germany - details of his journey to Germany where he fought in the Thirty Years War and was captured by the Imperial Forces - chose to serve in the Imperial Army but fell sick and found his way to Hamburg
