Grant by Sir Philip Gell, to Ralph Smith of Alsop, John Tomlinson the elder of Parwich John Tomlinson the younger, Francis Tomlinson of Hopton and George Tomlinson his son - whereas Eleanor Alsop, decd, widow of Anthony Alsop, did put into Gell's hands £50 and asked him to pay her interest thereon and asked that upon her death he would put the same to pious uses - of a rent charge of 30s a year issuing from a close at Carsington called Nearer Meadow Furlong (1½ acre) in the tenure of John Herold, lately purchased of Thomas Bayley and Anne his wife, and from a close called New Close, in the tenure of Robert Needham, lately purchased from Anthony Rippen, upon trust for the preaching of 10 sermons yearly in the church at Alsop en le Dale by such ministers as Gell and his heirs shall appoint, with proviso that if ever the protestant religion be replaced in England by popery, then the money to be divided yearly among the poor of Alsop until such time as the protestant religion be restored 2 Apr
