Administrative HistoryThe church dedicated to St Chad at Wilne is one of the oldest foundations in the county. St Chad, Bishop of Lichfield (died 672) is said to have had a preaching station at Wilne. The church was conferred on the prebendary of Sawley in 822 and was served by a chaplain or curate appointed by the Prebendary. After 1266 the church was served by the Vicar of Sawley but in the 16th century the vicarage of Sawley lapsed, and Sawley and Wilne were provided with a joint curate. The living of St Chad, Wilne was constituted a vicarage in 1865. Risley and Breaston were chapelries of Wilne until 1719 when they were joined together and the incumbents became perpetual curates. The parish of Breaston and Risley was formed in 1868 and they were separated in 1897 (see D2411, D2511). Draycott and Hopwell are included in the parish.

The church of St Mary at Draycott, dedicated in 1928, was built on Garfield Avenue as a chapel of ease to St Chad’s church, Wilne. [See D2513]. The congregation moved in 1967 to a building which had been the Wesleyan chapel until its closure in 1966. The new building was known thereafter as St Mary's Mission Church, and the former St Mary's became a community centre.
