| Administrative History | Prior to 1932, Alfreton, Belper and Clay Cross were all seperate divisions. In this year, Alfreton and Clay Cross merged to form a single petty sessional division, with Belper remaining separate. Following the end of the petty sessional divisions in 1978, the Alfreton and Belper Magistrates Court was formed.
The Alfreton and Clay Cross division had jurisdiction over Alfreton, Ashover, Blackwell, Brackenfield, Clay Lane (Clay Cross), Ironville, Morton, Pilsley Pinxton, Riddings, Shirland, Somercotes, South Normanton, South Wingfield, Stretton, Swanwick, Tibshelf and Wessington. The Belper division covered Alderwasley, Ambergate, Belper, Coxbench, Crich, Duffield, Hazelwood, Heage, Holbrook, Kilburn, Milford, Shottle, Turnditch and Windley. |
| Custodial History | These records were transferred to Derbyshire Record Office under the Public Records Act by the Clerk to Alfreton and Clay Cross Petty Sessional Division as well as the Clerk to Belper Petty Sessional Division in December 1963, November 1966 and July 1978. Further records were transferred by the deputy clerk to Ilkeston Magistrates' Court in May 1987, the Clerk to Buxton Magistrates Court in February 1990; then by North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates' Court in November 2014, April and August 2015, and in September 2016. |
