DescriptionThis map is described in the Derbyshire Record Society's "A Catalogue of Local Maps of Derbyshire c.1528–1800" (compiled by Harold Nichols, revised by Mary Wiltshire assisted by Susan Woore, published 2012). The description reads as follows:

A schemar draft of the comons belonging to Chappell and the houses and lands how they are scituate. [1675]. Surveyors: [Peter Barker, Thomas Stubbing]. Scale: Scale of one mile [1:11000] with dividers. Size: 65 x 85 cm. Materials: ink on parchment, 2 sheets now parted. Centred on: SK060810 Notes: cardinal points in margin, orientation incorrect, top of sheet east. Plan of Commons round Chapel, 1871 acres, with boundaries and areas: shows land graded and divided between Crown and inhabitants: enclosures mainly east of Chapel, with area at Eccles Pike: place-names, house names or tenants names: 'cloughs', brooks, topographical features, 'yates': houses, some with distinctive chimneys: one area marked 'The parsill of land claymed by Chappell Prsh and Fairfield': boundaries marked by reference to Dove Holes, hanging stone, Durrance Low. Endorsement on back: 'In Ducat Lanc. Apud capellam in le Firth in comitatu Derb. 12 die Septemberii 1693. Inter Attorn. General ex relacion Thome Eyre Ar. quer. Thomas Bagshaw gen. et al defts. This mapp was shewed to Peter Barker gent. on his examination to the 33rd interr. on the defts pte. before us [commissioners]'. A second endorsement reads 'The Mapp of Chappell parish commons by me Peter Barker but much mistaken'. Location: DRO, D239E/5466/1a-d; copy in DRO, D239E/5466/2a-b; DRO, microfilm M/721. A deposition on oath by Peter Barker concerning the land claimed by Chapel and by Fairfield which gives the date of the survey 'About May ye Twelfth 1675' and notes the assistance of Thomas Stubbing is printed in: C.E.B. Bowles, 'Concerning the Commons and Waste Lands in various Townships in the High Peak', Derbyshire Archaeological Journal, XXIV (1902) 32-41
