| Description | Jessop was a professional surveyor sent out to the West Indies by Sir Henry in 1820-21 to prepare a detailed report on the plantations inherited from William Philp Perrin. The correspondence includes: memorandum of instructions drawn up for Mr. Jessop, 24 Nov. 1820 (D239/M/E/21489); lengthy letter reporting his arrival in Jamaica, and his visit to Perrins, his inspection of the Bog, a pen which Sir Henry could purchase, the medical facilities available at Perrins, and an estimate of the cost of establishing a coffee plantation, 23 March 1821 (D239/M/E/21492); reports a visit to the Retrieve; "all the sugar estates [have] ... an uniform mode of management, almost mechanical, any departure from which would be considered an innovation that must necessarily be hurtful, and the overseers in general have neither inclination to depart from established habits, nor intelligence to see the propriety of doing so ....
