Administrative HistoryJohn Harpur (c1546-1622) married Isabella, daughter of Sir George Pierrepoint of Holme Pierrepoint, Nottinghamshire; by whom he had seven sons and five daughters. After her death, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew Noel of Brooke, Rutland, widow of Anthony Faunt of Foston and of Sir William Browne of Walcot. John Harpur held a number of public offices in Derbyshire and acted as agent for Gilbert, 7th Earl of Shrewsbury. Letters survive in the Shrewsbury and Talbot collections at Lambeth Palace Library which illustrate John Harpur's involvement in local government, including in relation to musters, military recruitment and investigation of alleged recusants. He was knighted in 1603. There is a substantial memorial to Sir John Harpur in Swarkestone parish church. Probate of Sir John Harpur's will was granted in 1622 by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. The document is held at the National Archives; a copy is at D2375/F/A/2/16.
