TitleGlebe Terriers
Date17th-19th cent
DescriptionGlebe terriers (surveys of glebe land) were first ordered to be drawn up by a Canon of 1571, but it was not until 1604 that series of glebe terriers were systematically produced. The series of terriers listed overleaf date mainly from 1612, though there is one for 1605 (or more accurately a “table of tyths” for Ravenstone). At intervals during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries fresh terriers were called for, usually as part of the preparations for an episcopal visitation. There is a gap in the series until 1682. Terriers describe the glebe land, and in some instances may also include details of church plate and furnishings, the churchyard, tithes, rectory etc.
