Title
Handwritten letter from Dora Axon to Charles Ogden
Date
26 Jul 1950
Description
Is enjoying walks on holiday despite dull weather. Comments on Ilfracombe as a resort and describes the libraries at Ilfracombe and Bideford. Reports dissatisfaction with Buxton library and the departure after nine months of Mr Arthur. Recounts the wish of the Library Committee to appoint her to the vacancy and the refusal of the Mayor to accept a woman as head of a department. Describes the inexperience of the selected candidate and his initially uncouth speech and behaviour. Describes Library Committee's response to her claim for re-grading: now awaits Finance Committee decision. Suggests that there are implications for other expenditure of the Gardens running at a loss. Asks about progress with Basic; mentions Prof Hotson and asks about Hotson's thoughts about the Shakespeare portrait. Has been reading Agate's Ego 9 and refers to the Shakespeare/Bacon theory. Mentions an endorsement of Ogden's article in Clifton Fadiman's Reading I've Liked. Invites Ogden to visit Buxton. Relates that Dr Warwick asked Dr Harrison to leave. Mentions old Woolis: now has few books but does have musical instrunets: she has bought a Zanetta violin of 1674 which she would like to hear played by Ogden's Norwegian friend. Wishes she could convey to Ogden the perfume of the lanes at Ilfracombe.

Extract:
Though I had the backing of my own Committee, they were over-ruled by the Mayor. … who shouted "No women" and flung the six applications [from women] aside without consideration. To an appeal made by the Library chairman, who said: "She's capable and she's qualified - what more do you want?" the Mayor said: "She's a woman and we can't have a woman head of department.
