Title
Typescript letter from Dora Axon to Charles Ogden
Date
20 Dec 1949
Description
Anticipates quiet Christmas with her sisters, with an opportunity to play duets with Ida, who has been studying under Dora Gilson. Mentions performance of Messiah. Bemoans chaotic absence of systems encountered at Buxton library; and the uphill task of making improvements. Describes assistants as "stupid glamour girls" and condemns a voluntary worker as avoidant of any work. Otherwise likes the work and is relieved not to be travelling to Whaley Bridge. Full time work leaves no time to worry about the Axon material. Did not reply to Mr Richards. Describes a holiday spent at a vegetarian guest house near Carnforth, including seeing very low prices at a book saleroom. Discusses restricted funds available for book purchases and salary gradings for Buxton library in contrast to Derbyshire County Council's practice. Refers briefly to Woolis, Dr Harrison and death of Dr Shipton. Asks about progress with Basic. Adds news of books sold cheaply by Hampson's then immediately sold at a large profit.
