Typescript letter, with handwritten additions, from Dora Axon to Charles Ogden
Date

Description
Relates her enjoyment at having started work at Chapel library: describes the range of work, including mobile library service; and positive response of her colleagues. Hopes to be able to continue at Chapel even after starting the forthcoming part-time post at Whaley Bridge. Gives news of new tenants. Reports correspondence with NZ Joe and discussion with Parson Dyer about financial matters relating to the Manchester houses. Asks Ogden's opinion about likely state of the second hand furniture market. Acknowledges that Neville was right in his opinion of the Latvian girl. Gives an assurance that she [Dora Axon] was not hinting at anything amiss in relation to the Russian lady's presence in the Harrison household. Writes approvingly of the Russian lady's dog. Asks after Ogden's actvities and news. Gives news of the death of Fred Hampson. Gives details of the content of Joe's letter relating to financial matters and ways of proceeding in relation to Ernest's estate, given lack of agreement between Dora Axon, Geoff and Florrie.

The borrowers are not bad - all kinds, but extremely friendly with just two or three intelligent ones. The library is a meeting ground for all the villagers and there appears to be no rule against talking, which everyone does, out loud. We never "shush" then as we used to do in Manchester; it's awfully funny and delightful.
