Title
Handwritten letter from Dora Axon to Charles Ogden
Date
17 Jul 1948
Description
Alone in the house so writing letters. Has been appointed to Whaley Bridge branch: hopes it will be congenial. Repeats comment by Henry (maid's husband) about returning to work at her age. Expresses thanks for information about R. S. A. library. Regrets news that his library may need to be put back in store. Comments on disposal of her books: has beeen told of low sale prices for books. Asks for an opinion about Gibson (dentist) wanting a filing cabinet and chair. Discusses illness and nursing of Latvian "charmer" [?lodger] who has beeen sacked from her job and now admitted to hospital. Refers to dealing with her luggage and regrets her leaving. Condemns Wallace, dentist, for dismissing her following a patient's complaint about receptionist being foreign, then offering Dora Axon the post. Reports information from Dyer, parson, about an elderly librarian cataloguing books of Manchester Unitarian college. Has declined invitation from Joe, brother-in-law to move to New Zealand. Feels some guilt about having burdened Ogden for a year. Wonders how she will accommodate working 20 hours a week. Alex improving slowly. Weather and war news are depressing. Wishes to clear books so that she could let another room.
