Date14 Feb 1948
DescriptionEncloses H.N.22 with a pasted slip to correct mis-spelling of "Axon". Estate not yet settled: asks for advice about her plan to acquire books, manuscripts and furniture. Repeats her reluctance to negotiate with Ernest's son and daughter. Discusses similiarity between a Rembrandt etching "Abraham and Isaac" in B M [British Museum?] and "ours" in the library. Agrees that items bearing Axon name cannot be disposed of until ownership is settled. Has a portrait of John Ruskin and reports finding letters (1916) between Ernest and T. J. Wise about this portrait: and a letter from J C Hirsfelt/Hirsfall [sic - probably T C Horsfall] about Ruskin's refusal to allow his pictures to go to Manchester. Has an "early German newsletter" referring to a flood in 1530. Asks whether to rescue from Buxton notes a letter from Ogden about Wilsha and Venn's Alumni and about a Shakespeare painting. Has enjoyed Headlam's book and has returned it. Asks whether Maurice Headlam is a relation. Reports some contents from letters written by Ernest: references to Mr Haward, curator of Manchester Art Gallery; and a comment by Ernest that every man should be his own executor and clear up his own rubbish. Is being tired by tackling the hall file: describes her process for amalgamating files. Has destroyed personal libellous material. Mentions letters about a Nicholson-Axon book and comments on Ernest having worked for Francis Nicholson for 30 years . Asks for an opinion about whether some duplicated replies can be destroyed. Alex is recovered: her help is needed. Appreciates being in demand for music: rehearsing a new work by Alec Rowley, and lists other events, including at the Dingley's house nearby. Describes a skipping rope game from her childhood ("Keep the kettle boiling") similar to a Greek game mentioned in Headlam's book.
