TitleLetters from Ernest Axon to Charles Kay Ogden
DateSep 1943-Feb 1947
DescriptionAlmost entirely concerning literary and scholarly matters, particularly linguistic matters, books and bibliographical queries, Basic English etc., with an occasional reference to events in Buxton and occasional offers of hospitality. Although no letters from Charles Ogden to Ernest Axon are known to have survived it is clear from the text of Ernest Axon’s letters that the two men sustained a regular exchange of correspondence.

Over the same period of time there are twelve letters written independently by Dora Axon as well as a couple of instances in which she added a postscript to letters written by her husband. These letters show a social exchange; with news of personal activities and of events in Buxton alongside responses to news of Ogden’s concerns. Some text implies that Dora Axon received letters of her own from Charles Ogden, independent of his correspondence with her husband.

In letters written in the weeks before Ernest Axon’s death in July 1947 Dora Axon indicates that she is writing on his behalf, conveying his messages.
