TitleTypescript letter from Ernest Axon to Charles Ogden
Date13 Jun 1946
DescriptionAcknowledges an opinion that Buxton was found better than London for shopping for bookcases, but assserts it is limited for meeting interesting people. Comments on honours list. Refers to Ogden's Brougham collection and comments on the pedigree in early editions of Burke's Peerage. Refers to death of Capt Jones and makes a joke about false conclusions that might be drawn if his collection of horns is found one hundred years hence. UNESCO would find Basic useful. Will English be an official language of republican India? Suggests that old medical books might contain references to Timothy Bright and discusses possible significance of a Latin inscription and Gawdy family of Norfolk. Refers to St Thomas [Ogden's dog]. Axon's lecture to Buxton Archaeological Society was read for him as he was unwell: it is being published in the Advertiser, incuding a portrait of Wilshaw. Mrs Axon busy in Manchester dealing with the furniture of a late aunt: since December 1944 six aunts and uncles have died. Has read the proof of a book about Cheshire churches. Mentions matters to do with the Borough of Buxton: appointment of freemen; rumours about whether the new entertainments manager will leave and his predecessor return. Mrs Pugh, Ogden's former neighbour, is in poor circumstances: about to be turned out of her house. Cannot remember about Gray's poem: speculates that perhaps Eton, not Peterhouse invited Gray to write it. Suggests that given his many clocks Axon might name his house the Horological Institute. Hopes to meet in London or Buxton.
