Administrative HistoryWilliam Harvey was appointed the first Treasurer of the Derbyshire Miners' Association (DMA) in 1880. The Treasurer was elected by delegates attending the DMA's Council, with salary and expenses determined by the Council and in the early days of the DMA a tenure of office, like that of Secretary, subject to election or re-election every six months. A gradual and substantial increase in membership of the DMA, greater income and wage concessions granted to mineworkers led to an expanding workload and calls for the role of Treasurer to be made full-time. Following the Great Lock-Out of 1893, which had exposed the inadequacy of employing a treasurer on an ad-hoc basis, the branches voted for the appointment of a permanent, full-time Treasurer.

The Treasurer's responsibilities included overseeing the paying and receiving of cash, keeping books of account, and preparing the monthly cash accounts.
