| Administrative History | Andrew Barclay Walker was born in 1824, the son of Peter Walker, himself a wealthy brewer, with several successful breweries in Liverpool, Warrington, Wrexham and Burton. However, after finishing his education at the Liverpool Institute, Andrew Barclay Walker became wealthy in his own right, inheriting and expanding his father's business, and using his wealth to indulge in philanthropy - most notably funding the construction of the Liverpool Art Gallery in 1873 to commemorate his term as mayor of the city - and to purchase the Osmaston Estate. He was knighted in 1877 and created the 1st Baronet of Gateacre in 1886. |
